For more than 50 years, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has celebrated National Small Business Week (NSBW), which recognizes the critical contributions of America’s entrepreneurs and small business owners.

Greg Brown, of the Huntsville-based company, Brown Precision, Inc (BPI), was selected by the SBA as the 2022 Alabama Winner of Small Business Person of Year (SBPOY) Award. The SBPOY Award recognizes exemplary entrepreneurs from each of the nation’s 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.

BPI manufactures specialized precision machines for diverse industries such as aerospace, medical, and power generation markets. Since Mr. Brown joined the company in 1995, BPI has grown to nearly 180 employees and over $23 million in sales. In addition to its 53,000 square-foot facility in Huntsville, Alabama, BPI had opened a new 30,000 square-foot manufacturing plant in Atmore, Alabama in 2016. Under Mr. Brown’s leadership, BPI has also benefited from SBA assistance through its 7a loan, 504 loan, and COVID-19 disaster assistance.

Mr. Brown stated that he can unequivocally say that if it were not for SBA programs, the company would not be in the position it is today. BPI is well positioned to continue growing and Mr. Brown is grateful that SBA recognizes the importance of U.S. manufacturer contributions like his company for the overall U.S. economy. Entrepreneurs, like Mr. Brown, are providing jobs for Americans and delivering the essential products that Americans depend on. It is these contributions that SBA seeks to recognize each year during NSBW. Mr. Brown was formally recognized by SBA Alabama District Director, Thomas Todt, on May 5, 2022, at an event held by the Huntsville-Madison County Chamber of Commerce, during the week of the 2022 NSBW.

WASHINGTON – Today, Administrator Isabella Casillas Guzman, head of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and voice for America’s 32.5 million small businesses in President Biden’s Cabinet, announced the 2022 Small Business Persons of the Year winners from each of the nation’s 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The winners will be formally recognized on May 5 during the National Small Business Week (NSBW) Virtual Summit’s Awards Ceremony, May 2-5. Homegrown Precision Manufacturing

Precision manufacturing is a rapidly emerging industry in Alabama. But, for Huntsville’s Brown Precision, it’s been emerging for over 30 years. And the company is now strategically expanding to the state’s southern aerospace corridor.

Brown Precision Manufacturing started out as a “little machine shop” in Huntsville in the 1960s, says Greg Brown, CFO, who co-owns the company with his brother, Dan Brown, president. Their CPA father handled the shop’s financials for years, and when the original owner planned to sell, the employees asked their accountant to purchase the business. The Browns’ father bought the business, then known as Simco Inc., in 1986.

At the time, the business was exclusively a government contractor, supplying spare parts to the Department of Defense. “We were constantly bidding on government jobs,” Greg Brown says. “Eventually, we got frustrated with government contracting and decided to do commercial work.”

Alabama Rocket Engineering Systems II Competition

Brown Precision was honored to support the recent Spaceport American Cup.

Here’s a recap of the event:
It is my pleasure to tell you that our ARES II team successfully launched our rocket at Spaceport America just over a week ago. The rocket, flying on one of the largest motors at the competition, took to the skies and is estimated to have reached close to 25,000 ft AGL.

Due to issues with the trajectory, loss of GPS signal, and timing of the event, we were not able to recover the rocket while we were on site. The Spaceport America crew has ensured us that they will continue the search in our absence.

Despite these issues, our rocket drew a lot of attention and excitement from the judges and other teams at the competition. This rocket would not have been possible without your support. As we look toward the future, I hope your company continues to support our program as we strive to push boundaries and bring the University of Alabama to the forefront of collegiate rocketry.

Brown Execs Award Checks to ECHS, FHS

Among the business conducted during the Monday, Nov. 28, Atmore City Council meeting were the approval of two agreements related to lighting and traffic signals near Rivercane Industrial Park and the swap of small tracts of land with Poarch Creek Indian officials.

But the agenda item that drew the most attention was the formal announcement of the winners of a contest among local schools to name the access road to the multi-million-dollar Brown Precision manufacturing facility presently under construction at Rivercane Industrial Park.

“The best part of this meeting is the presentation of the checks to our high schools,” said Mayor Jim Staff before the company’s co-CEOs awarded $400 each to Escambia County High School and Flomaton High School.

The road name that was chosen, Innovation Parkway, is actually a combination of the efforts put forth by the two local schools.

Greg Brown, Brown Precision’s chief financial officer, and Dan Brown, company president, awarded the giant facsimile checks.

“That’s one of our biggest missions as a company, to engage the community, because it takes everybody to have the kind of success we want to have,” Greg Brown said after the meeting.

“The kind of technology we’re pursuing requires some really high-tech young people who can see into space, who grew up playing video games.

After the checks were safely in the hands of ECHS Principal Dennis Fuqua and FHS Principal Scott Hammond, the council moved swiftly through the rest of its agenda. Council members gave unanimous consent to:

* a pact with Alabama Department of Transportation for installation, operation and maintenance of traffic control signals and roadway lighting.

* a resolution authorizing Civil Southeast LLC to make application to ALDOT for sidewalk improvements.

* a request by Concerned Citizens of Atmore for Christmas in the Park, an evening of holiday festivities to be held Dec. 17 in Heritage Park.

* the transfer of a retail off-premises beer license for Fast Lane on Jack Springs Road.

* an agreement with ALDOT allowing the city to install, at city expense, four light poles at the industrial access road on
Alabama 21, near Jefferson Davis Community College.

* warranty deeds related to a land swap under which the city cedes a triangle of land it owns in the Wind Creek Casino parking lot in exchange for a triangle of land owned by Poarch Band of Creek Indians that is located in the parking lot by Heritage Inn.

* granting of a utility easement to Poarch Band of Creek Indians through a drainage ditch that abuts Wind River Road South and Wind River Road North.

GE Looks to the Future of Manufacturing in the U.S. with Brown Precision Inc. as a Key Supplier

Manufacturing’s Next Chapter summit, organized by GE, was held in Washington, D.C. on February 7, 2013. The one-day event brought together executives, innovators, journalists and politicians and featured conversations on the intersection of manufacturing and technology as a driver of global economic growth and productivity. Speakers addressed the impact that the rapidly evolving manufacturing technology has on American industry.

American manufacturing workers include employees of GE suppliers like Brown Precision which received supplier awards from David Joyce, CEO of GE Aviation. GE Aviation alone spends $6 billion annually with some 1,500 large and small domestic manufacturers that employ 30,000 people.

The Alabama-based Brown Precision, which specializes in precision machining, is helping GE build next generation jet engines like the LEAP. The LEAP is first GE engine that has both ceramic and printed parts inside that make it much more fuel efficient.
